Today we talked about lines. We each wrote our signature on a piece of newsprint and took a good look at its line quality. Our signatures reveal hidden information about ourselves. They give us insight to our personalities, attitudes, and characteristics. Next we drew our name with the opposite hand. Third we used our normal hand, but started with the last letter and wrote from right to left. Finally we used our opposite hand and did not look at the paper as we wrote our name. Each version of our signature reflects something different. From the first to the last signature we noticed that the line became slower and less sure of itself. The last signature even reflected some distress and anxiety. The name didn’t change but the line quality did. The effect the line had on the viewer also changed. The first “normal” signatures give us the truest picture of ourselves, undistorted by constraints. Later we experimented with the speed of a line. Every line makes some kind of statement. It communicates to the viewer, often to the viewer’s subconscious state. After the signatures we drew analogs expressing various human characteristics or emotional states. It is amazing to realize how lines actually can express emotions.
